Scopes and responsibilities as a Personal Support Worker
Your job as a PSW involves helping clients with a multitude of everyday activities, including but not limited to:
- Assist with personal hygiene, personal care, and laundry
- Assist with house chores including grocery shopping, meal preparation, and house cleaning
- Cooperate with your client’s family and care team
- Teach life skills
- Check and record vital signs, clinical and treatment findings, behavioural changes
- Maintain a clean working environment
- Teach clients’ life skills
- Provide emotional and support services to client and their families

Job prospects include long-term care facilities, retirement homes, hospitals, group homes, adult day programs, and also provide home care services to clients living at home among other facilities. According to NACC guidelines, “The PSW Program prepares graduates to provide supportive care to individuals, including clients experiencing cognitive impairment, physical disability, and mental health challenges across their lifespan by assisting them with their activities of daily living.”
